The building we see today in Albert Street was built in 1892. However, an earlier building of blue stone was sited behind the current building and opened in 1874 for life classes by the Academy of Arts. The Victorian Artists’ Society was formed in 1888 after amalgamating with the Academy. Today the Society continues to hold exhibitions and art classes.
Mary MacKillop Centre

The Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre and Museum tells the story of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, her life and work and the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The gallery and museum are open to visitors Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm.
Eastern Hill Fire Station

This museum has a broad collection of fire fighting equipment and memorabilia going back to 1893. Bright red fire trucks from the stations earliest days have become a wonderful attraction for children. The museum is open Thursday and Friday 9am – 3pm, and Sunday 10am – 4pm.
Johnston Collection
The Johnston Collection is a museum of decorative arts. The house Fairhall is open for group tours Monday to Friday. Special exhibitions and lecture programs are held throughout the year.

National Sports Museum

Located on 2 levels of the Olympic Stand, entry is via Gate 3 in Yarra Park. The museum has a substantial collection of memorabilia that honours the history of Australian Rules football, cricket, soccer, the Olympic Games and many others. Open hours are from 10am – 5pm. Visitors should allow at least 90 minutes to tour the displays.
